Docs go into Backtalk

Chris McDonough moved the Zope Book and the Zope Developer Guide into his Backtalk system. Backtalk allows inplace commenting, similar to PHP's approach to incorporating community input. These comments then get integrated into the official version of the docs, produced at each Zope release. Backtalk also allows production of PDF.

The sprints have continued to prove successful. Jim traveled to England for a catalog sprint Feb 21-23. Tres and Paul went to Saarbrucken on Mar 4-6 for a workflow sprint with iCube. Jim and others went on Mar 22-24 to NYC for a sprint hosted by CodeIt. Jim went to the Beehive BBQ in Berlin on Apr 8-10 for a general purpose sprint. Finally, there is a sprint planned for EuroPython 2002 in Belgium. Notes for all of these are on the sprint page.

The development pace for Zope 3 has picked up, with strong participation from Steve Alexander, Gary Poster, PythonLabs, and others. Don't ask about ZCML without your asbestos suit on. At the beginning of June, Jim did a massive refactoring on the Zope3InWonderland branch. If you don't know what that means, join the zope3-dev list!

Zope 2.5.1 and planning for 2.6

April 23 saw the release of Zope 2.5.1, aka the Matt Kromer and Leonardo Almeida release. Leo collaborated in depth, and at great pain, to help isolate uptime issues with Zope 2.5 and Python 2.1.1. Thanks mostly to Matt's detective work and patching, 2.5.1 isolated and fixed the problem, and also included many other bug fixes.

On Jun 4, Brian Lloyd invoked papal authority to set a date for 2.6a1. This release has the distinction of being driven mostly by community contributions.

April saw a Bug Day, in which the zope-dev mafia got together to report and squash bugs.

Zope in the news

LinuxJournal ran a series of Zope articles in Reuven Lerner's "At The Forge" column. These are very good articles: Introducing Zope, Zope Products, and Zope Page Templates.

Jon Udell, who regularly writes some of the most interesting articles around, wrote a "Zope Lessons Learned" article in April. The "Road to Enlightenment" section at the end provides a useful survey of what's good in Zope, as well as what needs attention in Zope 3.

DevShed ran a pair of very useful articles in April. "Zope and MySQL" by icarus showed how a convert from PHP could approach RDBMS integration. "The Number Game" by Hamis Kamath showed the building of an online poll.

Beehive hosted another classic event in Berlin. The Beehive BBQ series will hopefully grow to be a regular part of the Zope universe. Beehive also launched a subscription-based "ZopeMag".

May 2002 saw an exciting open source conference, the International Forum of Free Software in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Zope and Python were very well represented.

Mar 2002 saw an Open Source Content Management Conference in Zurich. Paul Everitt gave a presentation on Zope and attended a Zope User Group Switzerland meeting afterwards. The conference was so successful that a non-profit organization has been created and another conference scheduled for San Francisco in September. Congratulations to Michael Wechner and Wynona for the event and the activity aftwards.
