Use Case: Define content metadata

Actor: Content Creator

Goal: Make information available to the end users of the site

The metadata is an integral part of a content object. It is data about the content data and contains information that describes when and where a content object will be visible, keywords used for generating dynamic lists of content, and other descriptive information.

To edit a content objects's metadata, navigate to the content object and select it. While viewing the content object, click the Metadata link in the actions box which will bring you to the Standard Resource Metadata form. Click the Edit all metadata link on the upper right side of this form.

This brings you to the Full Resource Metadata form where you have the opportunity to edit all of the content object's metadata. You will recognize several fields on the form from the Standard Resource Metadata form including Title, Description, and Subject, but there are also six new fields which we will discuss below. The metadata elements you are able to modify are as follows:

  • Title -- A string used to identify your content; a title provides a more human-friendly lable for the document. The title displays in the view of the document, as well as various other places throughout the CMF (e.g. search results).
  • Description -- A short summary, an abstract, or a table of contents for your content object.
  • Subject -- A list of keywords which is used in cataloging your content.
  • Contributors -- Used to convey others besides the Creator who have contributed to the content.
  • Effective Date -- The date when the content is effective to be publicly displayed on the CMF site. If this is left with a value of None, the content is always visible.
  • Expiration Date -- The date when the content is to expire from being publicly displayed on the CMF site. It defaults to an extreme date in the future to ensure it is by default, never expired.
  • Format -- The kind of physical representation of the content item, for example, text/html.
  • Language -- An abbreviation of the language the content item is wirtten in, for example, en, de, etc...
  • Rights -- A copyright and other IP information related to the content item.

After you have edited your content's metadata click the Change button. This brings you to the Standard Resource Metadata form with a notification message your changes have been sucessful.
