Please, may I have the option of selecting a mimimal
skin without the navigation links on the left.

I hate having to have wide browser windows that take up lots of space.

More importantly, I like to read the site (especially wikis) on my Palm Pilot using ISili. There I have a much smaller screen and I end up having to scroll past all those dang links.

If you can read this text, it means you are not experiencing the Plone design at its best. Plone makes heavy use of CSS, which means it is accessible to any internet browser, but the design needs a standards-compliant browser to look like we intended it. Just so you know ;)
