the char-set used for forms is 'UTF-8'
when you create an object with unicode characters the object is **not indexed** on save
when you create an object without unicode characters the object is indexed on save, when you later add unicode characters to the object, it is (silently) **not reindexed** and the existing index remains in catalog.
