First, a general point. I really like the way that Coad views patterns starting off with what he calls the "Fundamental Pattern" or "Collection-Worker pattern".  I know this as a general-purpose mediator pattern, and yes, it is the basic building-block of object-based systems that feature high levels of reuse.
